The kindness of strangers

Yesterday was an ... iffy day in the candy pink house.

Tiger and I made the spectacularly bad decision to go for walkies when there was a teensy hint of rain in the sky.

By the time we were half an hour away from the candy pink house, the teensy hint of rain had, suddenly and magnificently, transformed into a VERY HEAVY DOWNPOUR.

Of course, with only one umbrella between the two of us (and it mattering much more that little Tiger legs stayed dry than big Mummy legs), we arrived home with a dry, happy, sleeping Tiger and an utterly sodden Mummy.

And you know how Tiger seemed to have said "goodbye" to her middle-of-the-day nap?

Yesterday, notsomuch. So sodden Mummy had to remain sodden (and shivery!) for two hours after returning home.

And then sodden Mummy accidentally said something that made someone sad. And Mummy felt a bit horrible about that.
When Tiger woke, the Teething Monster had come to visit her, and she was a very sad little girl. It's breaking my heart seeing her in such pain and being utterly unable to fix it.

But we had lots of cuddles and stories and - most importantly - DISTRACTIONS, and things were not so bad, really. We went for another walk, in the glowing sunshine, and found Daddy, and Mummy made herself feel a bit more happy by buying Tiger some very cute little clothes (something she does not do very often), that make Tiger look a bit like she is an American baseballer ...

And then there were baths and "yummies" (code name for "solids"), and everything was lovely again.

But what is the point of this post?

The point is that it was a bit of a hard day, but interspersed with those hard bits were lovely bits too (apart from Tiger's smiles and giggles and cuddles). And those lovely bits came from strangers.

The man who very kindly offered us a lift in the rain - he didn't realise Tiger needs a special seat to sit in.

The lady in the IGA who, as always, enquired after Tiger's wellbeing and said she's growing up so well and I'm doing a good job.

The young dude in KMart who said my "little boy" would look gorgeous in the clothes I'd bought (Tiger was in the car with Daddy). I pointed out I have a little girl who just happens to prefer pants and tee shirts to dresses. The young boy said that Tiger sounds like a fantastic baby. I replied that she is.

She's incredible.

The lady on our second walk who said Tiger was a "special little person" ...

All of these people don't know me or Tiger from a bar of soap and we don't know them, but they gave us such a wonderful gift yesterday - they gave us kindness when we needed it most.

Sometimes, it's not your friends or family who help brighten your day. Sometimes it's perfect strangers who make us lovely.

Love this too, Kate. I felt like I was tagging along beside you like a fluttery, sticky-beaking guardian angel. :)
